On house prices and the economy

Isn’t it laughably wrong-headed to assume that rising house prices make everyone feel rich? How received economic wisdom equates record levels of mortgage repayments as a percentage of salary with high disposable wealth and free-and-easy spending remains something of a mystery. As always – when some people get richer, others get poorer.
