Who? The greatest guitarist you've (probably) never heard. Tisziji's a real musician's musician... well-known to an enthusiastic following of (largely ex-Coltrane) musicians in the States, including Pharoah Sanders, Rashied Ali, Ravi Coltrane and others, but little-known outside of that. He plays electric guitar with a free, late-Coltrane sound, and he's spectacularly good. He's also a remarkable person, with his own complex and profoundly worked approach to spirituality and philosophy. For tomorrow night's Jazz on 3, I spoke to pianist, Late Show With David Letterman musical director and long-time Tisziji-associate Paul Shaffer, pianist Marilyn Crispell, drummer Bob Moses and Tisziji himself, for a short feature late in the programme. More here. I'll return with a link to the BBC's "Listen Again" feature once it's available.
UPDATE (14/1/08) - go here to listen to the programme online, until Friday 18.
